Taking Care of Ourselves

Join visual artist Daniel Regan for this creative session that explores the myriad of ways that we can care for ourselves in the work that we do as artists. In this workshop Daniel shares his findings and takes you through a collaborative exploration of what self care in our practice could look like.

This session is ideal for artists:

  • Looking to explore setting professional/personal boundaries in their work
  • Exploring and defining what they need to do their best work
  • Making work that exploring their lived experiences
  • Struggling to let go of the content they are exposed to at work

What will I do in the workshop?

This workshop is for artists that explore personal subject matters surrounding lived experience, as well as for those that work on participatory projects with vulnerable people/groups, and want to consider sustainable practices to take care of themselves. Previous artists have been supported to:

  • Explore setting professional and personal boundaries in their work
  • Exploring and defining what they need to do their best work
  • Make work that explores their lived experience of illness
  • Let go of the content they are exposed to at work or in participatory practices.

We will explore 7 themes:

  • Diary management – looking at the emotional weight of work and the space required for processing
  • New work – what questions to consider asking, how will you be supported, what is the potential for distress, acknowledging capacity
  • Wonder – how do we know when everything is going well?
  • Minefields – navigating participatory practice, finding & acknowledging difficult feelings, ways to process
  • Letting go – rituals and practices for letting go of complex feelings/enmeshment with participants
  • Boundaries – navigating what is shared/kept for ourselves, communication styles
  • Burnout – identifying it, working our way out of it.

Please bring:

  • Notepad & pen
