Established in 1986, CCP has become a central figure in Australia’s creative lens-based arts scene. As a multifaceted institution, the CCP functions as a gallery, educational resource, professional development hub, and community space, fostering innovation in visual arts. For almost 40 years the CCP has played a crucial role in nurturing and showcasing new talent in photography, art, curating, arts writing, and interdisciplinary practices.
We have been instrumental in fostering critical discourse around contemporary photography, with our programs often including artist talks, masterclasses, panel discussions, mentorships, commissions and publications that engage with current debates in the field.
This is still the case, despite having to depart from our home of 20 years in George St, Fitzroy, and relocate to a ‘Project Space’ in Collingwood Yards in October 2024. This relocation was forced due to a number of unsuccessful multi-year funding decisions from State and Federal bodies.
The CCP actively supports emerging artists, offering a platform for experimentation and risk-taking through its program of exhibitions. The institution is renowned for its ability to incubate fresh ideas and promote cutting-edge practices from around the world, contributing significantly to the evolution of contemporary visual storytelling in Australia.
The CCP’s programming is characterised by a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusivity, ensuring a broad range of voices and perspectives are represented. Through its various initiatives, the CCP has cemented its reputation as a vital force in the Australian arts landscape. Its dedication to nurturing the next generation of visual storytellers ensures that it remains at the forefront of contemporary arts, both in Australia and globally. The CCP continues to be a dynamic space where new ideas are born, explored, and shared with the world.
