The Art of Publishing: An Exhibition of MACK Books

A major exhibition of MACK books, presented by Perimeter (Melbourne) with CCP traces the history of revered London-based photographic and art book publisher MACK. The Art of Publishing: An Exhibition of MACK Books will be accompanied by a public program including a major lecture by MACK founder and director Michael Mack on the opening weekend.

Originally established in 2004 under the imprint steidlMACK, while Michael Mack was managing director at legendary German publisher Steidl, MACK was founded in 2010 as an independent publishing house and is considered to be one of the world’s leading producers of contemporary and historical photography books. Highlighting the areas of interest and long-term relationships with artists that have resulted in some of the defining artist books of the twenty-first century, the show brings together books and special editions – many of which are rare and previously unseen in Australia – alongside original prints, explorations into digital publishing and the complete backlist of MACK.

The exhibition includes more than 200 books, editions and related objects. The books, including Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin – Holy Bible (2013), Paul Graham – a shimmer of possibility (2011), Alec Soth – Gathered Leaves (2015), John Warwicker – The Floating World (2009) and Collier Schorr – Jens F. (2005), are, in most cases, presented as physical objects to be held, handled and read.

The Art of Publishing: An Exhibition of MACK Books will open on Friday 5th January, 2018, 6pm-8pm. Please join us for a lecture by Michael Mack titled A Serpentine Progression on Saturday 6th, 2pm for a 2:15pm start. This is a ticketed event; tickets will be available from perimeterbooks.com. On Sunday 7th January, join Michael Mack and Perimeter Director Dan Rule for a one-on-one Book Proposal Review. This is also a ticketed event with strictly limited places, subject to ballot if oversold; tickets will be available for purchase from perimeterbooks.com.
