Workshop: Dance with KWABO Festival

To mark the opening of ‘Only the future revisits the past’ and taking inspiration from the works of exhibiting artist Omar Victor Diop, Gracieuse Amah of KWABO Fest will be running an interactive Afrodance workshop in response to Omar Victor Diop’s work. This is a free event, everyone is welcome to take part and the event is suitable for all ages.

Saturday 2 March, 4-6pm.

The opening of ‘Only the future revisits the past’ will occur following this event (6pm-8pm).

Gracieuse, also known as Grace or Kwabo Grace, is a force to be reckoned with—a Creative Director, Community Leader, Choreographer, and French Entertainment Legal Advisor. With roots stemming from French, Beninese, and Togolese heritage, her artistic expression mirrors a profound legacy, carrying forward the narrative of extraordinary women within her family. This drive led Grace to the establishment of Kwabo (Welcome) Events, a social enterprise dedicated to promoting holistic well-being, interculturalism, and social justice through the transformative power of African dance. Gracieuse has garnered accolades such as the 2021 Green Award (Best Cabaret Show) and has lent her talents to global and local artists, including but not limited to Ebo Taylor, Femi Kuti, Fally Ipupa, Ajack Kwai, Ausecuma Beats, The Experience Band, Niasha, and Alariiya. Serving as the permanent Choreographer for the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, she recently choreographed pieces for the AFROCENTRIC program curated by Candy Bowers as part of the NGV extra Triennial in response to Thomas J Price’s works. In Naarm (Melbourne), she stands as a respected choreographer and public engagement expert, contributing significantly to events and festivals such as the African Music and Cultural Festival, SOA Festival, and Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Founded in 2018 by Gracieuse Amah, the KWABO (Welcome) Festival, initially known as KWABO from Benin, originated from Gracieuse’s migration experience and isolation. KWABO Festival is not just an artistic showcase but a movement inspiring communities to actively participate, celebrate diversity, and forge connections and friendships beyond traditional boundaries.
