Deftereos' wall of expanda-files stuffed with photographs and soundbites draws on the logic of the Mundaneum (the 19th century equivalent to the internet) ? the archival model of memory. The Mundaneum's massive warehouse of knowledge was a museum of thought. Intended by its creators to condense the wonder of the world into a physical encyclopedia, it became a metaphorical equivalent to the memory of the world.
Your Own Personal Mundaneum interprets today's textual memory model as a palimpsest which contracts an individual's memory into a subjective archive of which the entries are photographic facts. In this way it explores the role that photographs play in the present construction of personal and public memories.
