The Spectre Smitten is the latest in a series of installations in which Garifalakis investigates the topology of horror. A fusion of disparate cultural and artistic practices, The Spectre Smitten incorporates elements of both low contemporary subcultures and high classical art, including horror cinema, Dadaist collages, Victorian funerary art, fanzine art and classical interior design and decoration. The exhibition focuses on the devices used in the construction of horror ? both material and psychological, and in doing so creates an uneasy dialogue between authentic, experiential horror and its culturally inherited signifiers.
