The Ribbon (2002) is an interactive video piece exploring the themes behind traditional depictions of female figures in folklore and fairy tales. Specifically, the work explores aspects of forbidden curiosity and its repercussions. By participating in the narrative the viewer initiates a chain of events that ultimately unite the character with her destiny. The viewer is forced to watch helplessly as the results of their actions are played out. Melbourne based artist Madeleine Griffith embeds a cautionary subtext in a traditional tale, dramatically conveyed through the use of symbolic and literal imagery.
Sound by Carl anderson.
