Span presents recent video works by three US-based artists which either hyper-compact or completely disperse the temporal experience of narrative. Bronson, Mori and Thater create moebius strip movies in which loops, cycles and artificial infinities generate timewarps. These works, so decelerated as to become mesmerising, or sped up to the pitch of delirium, stretch out across space rather than through time. This temporal shifting generates both wonder and boredom, an effect paradoxically close to the viewing of unmediated natural phenomena. These works are designed for moving audiences, with schizy attention spans. They emphasise a kinetic relationship between the audience and the work, freeing the viewer to walk in and out of the envelopes created by the video.
Span is a joint project between Artspace in Auckland and Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth and is supported in Australia by Pioneer Electronics and Pivotelli.
