Photographs tell stories and yet the camera never lies? It is this contradiction that lies at the heart of Cathy Laudenbach's fascination with documentary and narrative photography. In this series of Australian domestic interiors, Laudenbach seeks to document the ordinary and everyday aspects of life that often go unnoticed. Her photographs mark a sense of time as it is passing, capturing local histories fast fading from memory. Have you ever noticed how an empty room can contain traces of human habitation... an array of toiletries perhaps, pictures hung on the wall, an ever-growing pile of dishes in the kitchen? What is there to learn from the different things people own and the different ways in which they order their material environment? Furthermore, is it photography's role to provide such an anthropological record?
