The landscape in this country has always been at near the top of the political agenda. Landscape is variously enlisted in the service of romantic propaganda, nostalgic patriotism, mythological identity and spirtiual foundation. But the nature of culture is cultivated. It is the soil tilled, the ground cleared and levelled, the view rehearsed. The natural, when segmented, bound, classified and arranged, becomes landscape. I live on the land. It is my home. It provides shelter from the elements, nourishment for the spirit, and a refuge from humanity. Home is the stasis that measures my motion. It is where I photograph. It is the concept which organises and domesticates the landscape. It defines all other points in relation to itself. Home, the reference mark, is simultaneously the point of departure and the point of arrival, implicating landscape as a recursive domestic dialectic.
