What will the Australian landscape be like in the future? How are contemporary Australian artists interpreting the landscape of today? Artists working with media-based technologies have not only been intrigued with exploring and re-visioning the cultural and topographic landscape of Australia but also with creating environments which explore the aesthetics, geometry and architecture of exhibition spaces. Orbital incorporates a fusion of time-based media technologies and sensibilities to provide an immersive environment of images and sounds that offer new insights into the Australian landscape and position a landscape of the future.
Orbital brings together six of Australia's leading contemporary artists - Brook andrew and Raymond Peer, Megan Jones, Nicola Loder, Margie Medlin, and Nigel Helyer in an interdisciplinary media arts exhibition which explores issues related to salination, biological and technical ecosystems, cultural identity, colonialism and urban development.
Orbital is presented by Experimenta Media Arts and curated by Keely Macarow. It is being exhibited concurrently at the Centre for Contemporary Photography and the Lux Centre for Film, Video and Digital Art in London as part of Heads Up, the Australia Week in London Arts and Cultural Program. Experimenta gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the Australia Film Commission, Cinemedia, Arts Victoria, Australia Council, Head UP and City of Yarra.
