The dark, strange creatures in Chantal Faust's Monster series leap out from the oily, black shadows of these large-scale colour photographs. Blind, mangy and a little scary, the beast seems to push itself against an invisible glass screen - it's body contorted, fur flying and fangs bared in a silent yowl. Monster is the latest offering from Faust, she uses a flatbed scanner as a camera that literally compresses her subjects into the 2D realm of the photograph. The resulting images have a hyper-real surface detail and an oddly distorted depth of field, making for an uncanny and surreal viewing experience. This exhibition takes the scanning medium into a nightmarish world where monsters still lurk and are spawned out of darkness.
