Martin Smith explores the ongoing tensions of loss and grief in a new body of work titled In response to never being answered again. In May 1999 Smith's sister had a heart attack and passed away quietly six days later. In 2008 on the corresponding dates, Smith took a roll of film daily. Each of the six days is represented by a selected image, and text reporting the events has been hand-cut from the final image. The letters cut from the photograph are scattered at the base of the image to symbolise her passing as well as the tears that have been shed since her death.
The publication, Martin Smith photographs: In response to ... will be launched at the opening.
