Curated by Clare Firth-Smith & Ingrid Braun.
Fresh From Paris sees the collaboration of eight artists as they extend their conceptual practice through the development of works specific to this inter-disciplinary, photographic, new media and video based exhibition. The title Fresh From Paris arose from a shared interest in architecture, design, fashion, interiors, furniture, film and the web. The project is a conceptual examination of contemporary attitudes, focussing on appearances and the signature signs of many current trends.
Discarding the notion of a unifying theme, Fresh From Paris constructs a form of commonality through attitude. Each artist challenges the boundaries of their chosen medium in order to expand and complexify their practice. 'Concept' and 'process' are explored as primary concerns.
From Ingrid Braun?s investigation into divergent spatial realms - informed by early 1980s graffiti art and Op Art - to Darren Sylvester?s portrayal of fashion and its fleeting currency, the Fresh From Paris artists focus particularly on engaging in an exchange of ideas related to interdisciplinary studio practice and regional/locational issues.
This project has been assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
