dis/appearance: waiting room #4 considers left-out and left-over perceptual zones. Inspiration is drawn from overlooked spaces and experiences, the peripheral zones of glimpses and unregarded moments, blindspots and shadows. anderson and Carter's fourth waiting room continues an ongoing series of seven. It is subtitled 'nulbildung', a German word used to denote the (non) images that occur at the beginnings and ends of film rolls. In the in-between space of the waiting room, a disparate array of nulbildung present a series of truncated haphazard moments that are purely chemical, low-resolution, deadpan, commonplace. These are voices from the margins, images from the urban and social unconscious. Is this a mode of seeing associated with waiting or an architecture of the gap? The ambiguity of these images forms their essence. They display a shadow narrative of might-have-beens without which the narrative of the powerful would have no meaning.
