Hayden Fowler's Call of the Wild evolved in the window of a High Street fashion house as part of the Auckland Festival - AK07. Fowler offered the skin of his back as the site of resurrection for the Huia bird, a native of New Zealand, hunted to extinction for its feathers, which were highly coveted as status and fashion accessories. Working with animal and human subjects within elaborate stage sets, Hayden Fowler's work perverts the familiar, mixing references as wide-ranging as the baroque, science fiction, tribalism and pop-culture. His performance, photography and video are reminders of the inequitable relationship between humanity and nature. Commingling humour, hope and the disturbingly nostalgic, Fowler critiques the idea of ‘nature’ as it exists within the fragmented experience of contemporary life.
