In 1980, leaving the Sharpies gang behind, Peter Robertson moved to Melbourne to start a new life for himself modelling; the next few years were a fusion of fashion, nightclubs and art. Beyond Xanadu chronicles a time of great change for Robertson and Australia. Fashion was baggy trousers, padded shoulders and colour. Music had become New Wave. Beyond Xanadu is a retrospective series that chronicles both a real and imagined past. We've moved on so far now, these ambiguous images of fashion spreads seem ludicrous. Why is it we can see the absurdity in aesthetics of an earlier period, yet fail to see it now?
