Bad Blood is a photo-based floor installation featuring what initially appears to be a large pool of blood. By simply looking into the puddle, the viewer produces a reflection and becomes momentarily implicit in the violence it suggests. Garifalakis is concerned with the way in which representations of horror manifest themselves in different areas of contemporary popular culture. Emphasis is placed on the low-fi or low-brow elements of horror: cheap special effects such as fake blood or an all too obvious theatricality. Recycling the iconic cliches of horror, Garifalakis creates an uneasy dialogue between authentic experiential terror and its culturally inherited signifiers.
