Presented by Boris Eldagsen, at CCP on Saturday 6 June 2009
What does an artist need to produce strong staged photography? Expensive camera equipment? Additional light sources? Assistants? Actors? Set designers? Make-up? No, no, no, no. Just a good eye, intuition and a personal understanding of your subject are all you need. Successful staged photography is all about content. Any camera can do the rest.
Having worked with no-budget staged photo-media for 15 years, Berlin-based artist Boris Eldagsen will give his insights into how to increase your skills in working with what you have.
Participants will use a selection of spam emails as source material for the images produced in this workshop. The text in these emails will form the basis for the narrative and inform the staging of the photographs. During the course of the day, participants will learn how to enhance their creative imagination and develop strategies to work without expensive equipment. Participants will enjoy learning to break conventional rules and leave afterwards with images they may have thought were never possible.
The workshop will be divided into three parts:
Providing examples of former works, Boris Eldagsen will present a lecture on how to be creative with equipment, light, models and props. Speed-dating will help the participants find two others they would like to collaborate with. Each team chooses their favourite spam email to work with during the day.
Each team chooses a location in close proximity to CCP to photograph in. During production Eldagsen will spend an equal share of time with each team providing individual tips on how to make a strong image with meaning.
All teams meet at CCP again, to share the images they have made, discuss the experience, and reflect on improvements.
Berlin-based artist Boris Eldagsen has exhibited internationally since 1991 in institutions such as Fridericianum, Kassel; Deichtorhallen, Hamburg; The Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn; The International House of Art, Brno; Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne; and Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney. Eldagsen works as a multi-media consultant and arts lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, Mainz, Germany, as well as at the Centre for Ideas, Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne and Photography Studies College, Melbourne.
